A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
NEWPORT BEACH REQUESTING THE STATE LEGISLATURE
TO ADOPT A JOINT RESOLUTION URGING THE STATE
HIGHWAY COMMISSION TO EXPEDITE THE CONSTRUCTION
OF THE PROPOSED NEW PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY BAY
BRIDGE
WHEREAS, the California Department of Transportation
has scheduled a project to replace the existing 4 -lane bridge
on Pacific Coast Highway over Newport Bay, between Bayside
Drive and Dover Drive - Bayshore Drive; and
WHEREAS, the purpose of the project is to alleviate
traffic congestion and reduce the serious accident rate because
of the existing narrow bridge, as well as to avoid the necessity
of closing the bridge for extensive repairs because of its
present deteriorated condition; and
WHEREAS, the closing of the bridge for extensive
repairs is considered unacceptable by the Department of Trans-
portation since it would require Pacific Coast Highway through
traffic to travel a minimum additional distance of six miles,
over roads incapable of carrying such traffic volumes; and
WHEREAS, the project is presently scheduled for
construction in the 1976 -77 fiscal year;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Newport Beach that the State Legislature is hereby
requested to adopt a joint resolution urging the State Highway
Commission to expedite the construction of the new Pacific Coast
Highway Bay Bridge, in order to alleviate traffic congestion, re-
duce the accident rate, and provide a safe and efficient alternate
to the existing bridge as soon as possible.
ADOPTED this 12th day of August, 1974.
