RESOLUTION NO. 8454
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING THE EFFORT OF THE
KERN COUNTY VETERAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL FOR THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL CEMETERY IN THE
COUNTY OF KERN
WHEREAS, the United States National Cemeteries of
the Presidio of San Francisco and Fort Rosecrans at San Diego
and the Golden Gate National Cemetery at San Bruno are completely
filled and have had to be closed; and
WHEREAS, the 93rd Congress did enact Public Law 93 -43,
the "National Cemetery Act of 1973 ", which establishes a National
Cemetery System within the Veterans Administration for the
interment of deceased servicemen and veterans; and
WHEREAS, the Kern County area is within the.geographical
and population center of the State and is serviced by two major
transcontinental railroads and two major national highways and
has, in addition, a modern airport system; and
WHEREAS, two of the nation's largest military installa-
tions (Edwards Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Center) are located
in Kern County; and
WHEREAS, the Kern County Veterans Affairs Council has
received an offer of dedication of an appropriate site in Kern
County from a major land owner; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Newport Beach
believes there is a need and it would be desirable to establish a
National Cemetery in Kern County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach hereby supports the efforts of the
Kern County Veterans Affairs Council to establish a National
Cemetery within Kern County, State of California;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is authorized
to send copies of this resolution to our United States Senators

and Congressmen, urging their support of this proposal pursuant
to the "National Cemetery Act of 1973 ".
