RESOLUTION NO. 8964
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH PROTESTING THE PRACTICE
OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OF
SELLING THE NAMES AND ADDRESSES OF REGISTERED
AUTOMOBILE OWNERS
WHEREAS, the Department of Motor Vehicles is authorized
by California Vehicle Code Section 1810 to sell information from
its records concerning the registration of any motor vehicle,
including the name and address of the registrant;
WHEREAS, the Department of Motor Vehicles does in fact
sell this information in large quantities for mass mailings; and
WHEREAS, such information is often used by advertisers
for dissemination of unsolicited junk mail; and
WHEREAS, such mass mailings result in large deficits
in the operating costs of the U. S. Postal Service.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach does hereby object to the practice
of the California Department of Motor Vehicles of selling informa-
tion from its records concerning the registration of any motor
vehicle when such information is used in furtherance of the
business interests of advertisers who make improper use of bulk
mailings at taxpayers' expense.
