A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF NEWPORT BEACH EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO
THE CITY OF COSTA MESA FOR PROVIDING STAND -BY
POLICE OFFICERS DURING THE DAVIS CUP TENNIS
MATCHES
WHEREAS, the United States vs. South Africa Davis
Cup Tennis Tournament was held in the City of Newport Beach
on April 15, 16 and 17; and
WHEREAS, the Police Department received advanced
information that a large number of demonstrators would attempt
to disrupt the tennis matches in protest against the political
situation in South Africa; and
WHEREAS, the City of Costa Mesa provided a special
squad of fifty (50) uniformed police officers as stand -by in
the event they were needed to aid Newport Beach Police in
dispersing demonstrators; and
WHEREAS, fortunately the services of these
Costa Mesa police officers were not needed; however, considerable
cost was incurred by the City of Costa Mesa in providing
salaries for these officers for the time they remained on
stand -by; and
WHEREAS, the City of Costa Mesa has indicated that
they would absorb these costs and have decided not to charge
them back against the City of Newport Beach; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newport Beach appreciates the
cooperation and assistance received from the Costa Mesa Police
Department during the Davis Cup Tennis Tournament;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council
of the City of Newport Beach hereby wishes to express its
appreciation to the City of Costa Mesa for providing stand -by
police officers without charge as back -up to the Newport Beach
Police Department during the recent David Cup Tennis
Tournament.
