A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING PROPOSITION 9 AND URGING A "YES" VOTE ON THE PERIPHERAL CANAL MEASURE APPEARING ON THE JUNE 8, 1982 BALLOT WHEREAS, the Supreme Court has ruled that by 1985, Southern California's supply of water from the Colorado River will be cut in half; and WHEREAS, the increasing possibility of serious water shortages within the next decade is a source of continuing concern to all residents and businesses in the City of Newport Beach and Southern California; and WHEREAS, the State Water Project furnishes water to more than 15 million people in the South San Francisco Bay area and Southern California, and to hundreds of thousands of acres of agricultural land in the San Joaquin Valley; and WHEREAS, after 1985 the State Water Project will be the largest single source of water supply for Southern California; and WHEREAS, the Peripheral Canal has been found to be the most economical, efficient and environmentally acceptable method of moving water across the Sacramento -San Joaquin Delta; and WHEREAS, both the United States Fish and Wildlife Commission and the California Department of Fish and Game agree that the Peripheral Canal is "the soundest method of transporting water over the Delta "; and • L_J WHEREAS, a referendum on the issue of the Peripheral Canal (Proposition 9) has been set for June 9, 1982; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Newport Beach, does hereby support the Peripheral Canal Project and does urge all voters to support Proposition 9 and the Peripheral Canal; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors of the County of Orange and all cities within the County, are hereby urged to go on record in strong support of ratification of the Peripheral Canal Referendum; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk of the City of Newport Beach is directed to send a copy of this Resolution to the appropriate local government entities and counties, water districts, representatives of the State Senate and Assembly and Governor Brown's office.
