DECLARING CALIFORNIA COASTWEEKS
SEPTEMBER 16 THROUGH OCTOBER 9, 1989
WHEREAS, THE State of California has one of the world's most
•unique coastlines including sandy beaches, protected coves and bays,
rocky shores, vital estuaries, marshes, tidal areas, harbors and
urban development; and
WHEREAS, California's coast provides an unsurpassed mixture of
scenic beauty, recreational opportunities and important examples of
our cultural, natural and historical heritage; and
WHEREAS, the California coast and coastal ocean also provide one
of the most valuable economic resources within the State including
recreation, fishing, tourism and other forms of industry; and
WHEREAS, the preservation and protection of these resources
should be a matter of the highest public priority requiring the on -going
distribution of information geared towards an increased level of
public awareness; and
WHEREAS, national "Coastweeks" will be held from September 16
through October 9, 1989;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Newport Beach
hereby recognizes and supports the designation of the weeks September
16 through October 9 as California Coastweeks; including September 16
as "Estuaries Day ", and September 23 as "Adopt -A -Beach Coastal
Cleanup Day "; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Newport Beach encourages
all public institutions, private groups and business and individual
citizens to observe these events and to participate in activities in
their local community which promote the responsible preservation and
protection of the California coastline.
ADOPTED this 25th day of September 1989.
