A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH SUPPORTING THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF DRUG FREE ZONES NEAR SCHOOLS
• WHEREAS, the use of illegal drugs is a problem throughout the nation
and within the City of Newport Beach; and
WHEREAS, the
sale of illegal
drugs
to children is particularly
deplorable in that it
destroys young
lives,
has disastrous effects on
families, on communities
and ultimately
on the
future of our nation; and
WHEREAS, California Public Health and Safety Code and the United
States Code provide for enhanced penalties for persons who distribute
drugs to minors on or within one thousand feet of a public or private
school; and
WHEREAS, the use of signs to clearly delineate such area will serve to
publicize this program and deter such criminal activity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Newport Beach approves the establishment of "Drug Free Zones"
within one thousand feet of all public and private schools within the City;
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that
all City
departments and in particular
the Police
Department and the General
Services
Department are directed to
coordinate
with the Newport Mesa Unified
School District and the operators
of private
schools within the City to
design,
produce and install signs
delineating
such zones within the City.
