Dear members of the Newport Beach City Council,
I have put together our opinion on how we feel about the proposed recommendation by the NB
Arts Commission to place ten sculptures in the Civic Center park.
I hope that all members of the City Council take the time to read, study, and discuss this file
thoroughly. We do appreciate your help and will make ourselves available for further discussions
at your convenience.

Newport Beach City Council and City Administrators
The City has promised that they will always be good neighbors
to all of the residents that live close to City Hall. We accept and
rely on these promises for the protection of our lifestyles and the
protection of our views without compromise.
I have studied what the park sculptures look like, their proposed
placements, and some photo -sims of what they would look like
in place. I am strongly against this project.
During the original development of the area, before plans were
ever drawn, the city leaders assured the residents that City Hall
would be built on the front part of the parcel and the the rear
section of the parcel would be developed as a natural wildlife
preserve for the animals. This is how the project was sold to
the neighboring residents and the followers of Dr. Jan
Vandersloot. All parties were satisfied. Architectural plans for
the property were supposedly made with this being a main
focus.
I oppose this project because the Art Commission's proposal is
in complete contrast to the original agreement between the City
of Newport Beach and the local residents.
Here are three pieces that are especially troublesome:
2. "Red Gateway" is bigger than a truck at 20 feet long and 8
feet high and painted bright red. Being only 20' long it could
be parked on city streets for 72 hours. If it were 2 feet
longer, it could be parked on city streets for only 24 hours.
This plan is asking that we accept this monster to be parked
in our view plane for 2 years. A very reflective and highly
visible piece.
4. "Cub Triptych" measures in at 15 feet wide and 9 feet tall
and painted bright green. A basketball goal is 10 feet tall.
This also has a life span of 2 years as do all 10 sculptures.
10. "Odyssey" 22 feet tall and 20 feet wide. It will be placed
in the same region as the "Sail" and will be very identifiable
in height.
To my knowledge no one knows the reflective effects that any of
these 10 sculptures will have after assembly. Nor do we know
how much each article will fade, rust, or decompose in the two
year period.
We do know for sure that we in Harbor View Broadmoor do not
want these sculptures placed on the Newport Beach City Hall
property.
As an alternative suggestion - -all ten sculptures could be sent,
one in a package, to some of the smaller parks in the City of
Newport Beach. That way all of the citizens of Newport Beach
could share the art, and each artist could have individual
exposure and recognition without having to compete with the
other artists.
In the rest of the park, the animals have slowly been returning as
the vegetation grows. We are hopeful that the City Forestry
Division will continue to work on this parcel to help the area to
return to its natural state.
The natural wildlife was so beautiful to watch early in the
morning and at sunset. I hope that we can return to those times
in the very near future.
Thank you for your time, and I am hopeful that you will take my
suggestions very seriously.
Personal regards,
Jim and Sandra Warren
