Does more MAP mean more flights?
Not
necessarily — Load
Factors are
a big part of this
In
2002, flights averaged
70.37% full +
Southwest flew a 737 -300
In 2014, flights averaging 84.61 % full + Southwest flying 737 -800s, too.
A
SW 737 -300 (2002)
► Seating= 137
► Load Factor = 70.37%
► To reach 10.8 MAP:
154 flights /day
SW 737 -800 (2014)
► Seating= 175
► Load Factor = 84.61
► To reach 10.8 MAP:
100 flights /day
► To reach 11.8 MAP:
109 flights /day
.V
These are generalized examples only — most SW flights are 737 -700s seating 143 persons
FAQ (cont'd)
Does +10 (to 95) Class A ADDs mean more loud flights?
Not necessarily
Class A = the loudest flights
❑ Must be able to get past NMS #7 at <93 dB SENEL
Class E = "E" stands for "exempt" flights — regulated not by the Class
AADD cap but still by the MAP CAP.
Must be able to get past NMS #7 at <86 dB SENEL
In 2014, there are about 113+ total ADDs (80.24 are Class A)
An Important Note: NextGen...
Channels more flights over fewer neighborhoods.
If you live in those neighborhoods, you can perceive more impacts.

Class A = < 93 dB
Class E < 86 dB

II
Same Plane - One's an E, One's an A
Southwest Airlines 737 -700
100 passengers
Destination: San Jose
• Less fuel, passengers, luggage
Class E (< 86 dB at NMS #7)
Alaska Airlines 737 -700
130 passengers
Destination: Seattle
• More fuel, passengers, luggage
Class A ( <93 dB at NMS #7)
But some flights slotted as Class As may
actually be below the Class E dB threshold
FAQ (cont'd)
► "I don't see planes using the
Noise Abatement Takeoff
Procedure anymore."
True, some don't.
Many still do
It never was required — what
was required was:
Stay below each NMS target
Plane technology has
improved, so more planes
meet the A/E thresholds
without the noise abatement
takeoff.
