EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The American Red Cross would like to recognize Newport Beach Lifeguards for hosting
the 1999 Blood Drive at Lifeguard Headquarters, and Marine Safety Lieutenant Jim
Turner for his efforts as the Blood Drive Coordinator.
BACKGROUND
Every year for the last 16 years, Newport Beach Lifeguards have supported the blood
collection efforts of the American Red Cross. The collection efforts originally began as a
friendly competition effort with Huntington Beach City Lifeguards. This competition
has expanded to all lifeguard agencies along the Orange County Beaches. The 161h
annual Lifeguard Blood Drive Competition in Newport Beach was held on July 216'.
The third highest total ever collected by Newport Beach was recorded this year. Marine
Safety Lieutenant Jim Turner has long been a supporter of this program. He
coordinated the winning effort again this year.
Lifeguards, friends, and other City Employees contributed 57 pints of blood to the
collection efforts. A successful program will produce 30 pints of blood.
