BACKGROUND
Jeffrey Stern, a long time contributor towards the emergency preparedness effort,
passed away last October. In an effort to recognize Mr. Stern's involvement and
achievements in the emergency preparedness area, an annual Community Preparedness
Award has been created in his name. The Jeffrey Stern Community Preparedness
award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding efforts to both their personal
emergency preparedness endeavors, as well as to the preparedness of the Newport
Beach community.
Edward Karagozian, a resident of Newport Beach since 1979, has been an active
volunteer with the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES). Edward has been
responsible for coordinating training, recruitment, drills, and radio equipment with
RACES, complimenting the emergency responders of the City of Newport Beach..
Edward has also served as a City Liaison with Orange County RACES and Orange
County Communications for the purposes of disaster communications preparedness;
The City of Newport Beach community relies on RACES and its volunteers as a vital
