CITY COUNCIL AGENDA
ITEM NO. 6
TO: Mayor and Members of the City Council
FROM: Public Works Department
SUBJECT: SKATEBOARDING RESTRICTIONS AT THE ARCHES INTERCHANGE
RECOMMENDATIONS:
Adopt Resolution No. Prohibiting Skateboarding on certain streets and
sidewalks and rescinding Resolution No. 97 -34. Direct Staff to contact Caltrans to
obtain authorization to install the appropriate signs on State property.
DISCUSSION:
The Public Works Department proposes restricting skateboarding throughout the entire
Arches Interchange (West Coast Highway at Newport Boulevard). The Police
Department recently responded to complaints of skateboarders disrupting traffic on
Coast Highway while videotaping a documentary utilizing a professional skateboarder.
Skateboarders have also caused damage to new landscaping and to railings.
Approval of the proposed Resolution will add the Arches Interchange to the list of
locations where skateboarding is prohibited. Staff would work with Caltrans to obtain
approval to post "No Skateboarding" signs in locations deemed necessary to address
public safety and property damage concerns.
Respectfully submitted,
