Meeting Minutes
PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO THE CURRENT CITY COUNCIL AND ENTER INTO THE PUBLIC RECORD.
We have read the proposed staff reports in connection with the proposed Project at Newport Blvd. and 32nd street. We
ask that the Council take No Action on the proposed recommendations or authorize any further expenditures in
connection with the proposed parking lot/structure prior at this time, as the project should be vetted and any proposals
vetted by the new City Council, and the Public.
Specific comments:
1. We commend the City for acknowledging the need to balance the functionality of a Parking facility with aesthetics
of some landscaping.
2. The report is confusing, and potentially misleading- what, specifically,is the area known as Via Lido Plaza?(This
has traditionally been understood to be the land owned by Duda entity. If the historical understanding of the "area"
and its definition is to be changed, this should be clearly asserted to the public and vetted in a transparent
manner. The City does not have the authority to dictate specific landscaping and design to private developers or
operators associated with their private parcels. Having said that, we appreciate the prospective benefits of an
integrated landscaping approach, which can be developed in collaboration with the private parties and the
community.
3. " Sidewalk approach for the Penninsula"----I am a resident and have been active. What is "The Sidewalk
Approach"? Colored Circles on the pavement with material which is expensive and impractical . This is evidenced
by the formations on the sidewalks near the Balboa Pier area. The community has repeatedly stated that it is
interested in being revitalized in an simply elegant, tasteful manner, NOT along the lines of a coney island
approach.
4. The mantra should be, "Think Smart" rather than "Think Big."
PLEASE, no more spending that is not aligned with the community's interests or desires.
Thank you
