This 80 -year history is highlighted on the attached outline. To honor this 80th Anniversary, Patrick Bartolic, Chair of the Board of Library Trustees, with assistance from library customers, will present to the City Council two oversized birthday cards — one with thank you notes from adult library customers; and the second, from the children of the community. The cards have been available in the libraries in the past weeks so that customers could write notes and /or read comments from their neighbors and friends. Attachment NEWPORT BEACH PUBLIC LIBRARY Ce%brC7 tiny 80 Yec7,.s ofSe ?vice 1920 -2000 December 1910 — Ebell Club provided small circulating collection obtained from State Library, available 3 hours a week. February 1911 — Ebell Club members developed 300 book permanent collection, made available each afternoon. June 7, 1920 — City Council Ordinance No. 166 established free public library, as a result of a formal request made by the Women's Civic League. Board of five Library Trustees established. May 1929 — Dedication of new City library, constructed in East Newport Park on Balboa Boulevard. Budget of $7,000 for the 2,200 sq. ft. building. October 1947 — A "Station" library opened in Corona del Mar, with the assistance of the Corona del Mar Business Association. March 1954 — New City Charter vested authority for administration of the library with Board of five Library Trustees. May 1957 — Friends of the Library incorporated. July 1959 — Corona del Mar Branch on Marigold Avenue officially opened. Ninety percent of the $29,000 cost donated. April 1963 — Mariners Branch Library opened with 10,000 books. Friends and others collected $15,000 for building. January 1980 — Newport Center Branch Library on San Clemente Avenue opened. January 1989 — Newport Beach Public Library Foundation incorporated. July 1994 — Dedication of the new Central Library, 1000 Avocado Avenue. Fundraising by Library Foundation and Friends with two million dollars raised. Year 2000 — 80" Anniversary — 24/7/365 service.
