Re: Budget Amendment
A check from the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation in the amount of $102,100 will be
presented to City Council on January 9, 2001 and deposited in account 800 -2248.
Please approve a budget amendment to appropriate funds to the following expenditure accounts:

I. Technoloev for Children $50,000
Funds will be used to improve technology for youth at the Central Library and three
branches. Included will be new furniture to house additional computer workstations at
Central and Mariners Library. Computers are in constant use by youth. Thirteen PCs with
software will replace older computers and placed at new workstations, thereby providing
children with easy access to information for their personal and school needs.
II. Digital Microfilm Printer /Scanner System $10,000
Digital microfilm scanning provides the capability for convenient image transmission via the
Internet, fax or e-mail. This system will provide a bridge between the old technology
(microfilm) and the new technology (electronic mail), and will bring a new level of
convenience to copying of microfilm.
III. Upgrade of Existing Equipment $40,000
The library will replace 23 personal computers that are seven years old and are 166mhz or
less. They are not capable of running the Windows NT operating system required for the
programs and databases that the library makes available to the public. As the cultural,
educational and informational heart of Newport Beach, the library must provide its
customers with cutting edge technology.
IV. Balboa Branch Support $1,000
A gift of $1,000 was given in support of the Balboa Branch Library. This funding will be used
for additional shelving for Nautical videos. Funds will also supplement the one -day videos
which are especially popular with Balboa residents.
V. Enhancement of Audio Book Collection $1,000
The audio book collection is one of most heavily used collections in the library. Funds will
be used to enhance both Books on CD and Books on Cassette with multiple copies of best
selling titles.
VI. Restricted Funds $100
Funds will be used to acquire books to enhance the materials collection.
