REPORT TO THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
SUBJECT: City of Newport Beach Endorsement of Career Directions for
Students, Orange County Edition
SUGGESTED
ACTION: Approve City of Newport Beach endorsement
An organization called Career Directions has requested City of Newport Beach endorsement of
its program and an Orange County edition of its book. Career Directions is a mentoring program
that seeks to guide students' career choices through profiles published in a book. The book
includes profiles from leaders and employees at businesses who sponsor the book, as well as
from community leaders who are sponsored by a business. The books will be donated to all
public schools in Orange County. Endorsement does not involve any financial commitment from
the City.
I saw the Seattle edition of the book, and thought it was well done, with a broad range of career
choices highlighted with helpful information on what the career involves, what education or
training is needed, etc. The Orange County Superintendent of Schools has supported the
program with the attached letter.
