Re: Utilization of Funds to be Appropriated

indicated
Account 4060 -7020. $25,000 to fund the salaries of the Literacy Coordinator
($12,678) and the Literacy Assistant ($12,322). These funds allow
the library to continue working with students and tutors, as well
as expanding programs.
Account 4060 -8010. 500 for resources and equipment to enhance the Families for
Literacy programs.
Account 4060 -8050. Jj,500 for mailing of communication and Literacy newsletters to
clients and tutors.
Account 4060 -8080. 1 000 for contract services to run Literacy programs and for
tutor training.
Account 4060 -8104. 1 000 for attendance of literacy staff at the Statewide Library
Conferences.
Account 4060 -8140. 2 500 for supplies ($1,500) and printing ($1,000) necessary to
support the Literacy program.
Account 4060 -8200. jj,500 for instructional resources to conduct the programs.
H. Funds in the amount of $83,045 to 4010 -8260 for library and collection development.
Account 4010 -8260 $16,000 for Children's Nonfiction Materials.
Children's nonfiction is in constant demand by children for their
recreational needs and in meeting the heavy curriculum demand
of the schools. The current collection does not meet the
demand. It is imperative that the library collections have current
materials in all areas of knowledge. At the Central library with
its high student use, it is also necessary to have multiple copies
of books on frequently assigned topics. Additional funds will
enhance a heavily used area of the collection and provide
children greater likelihood of needed materials being readily
available.

J1 ,M for Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians is the
definitive work on music. The 29- volume set is international in
scope and includes information on 20th century composers, jazz,
rock, and popular music. Encyclopedic coverage of musical
instruments and their history extends to non - Western, folk, and
popular instruments. Library Journal named New Grove
Dictionary of Music and Musicians one of the best reference
works of the decade.
4 500 for additions to new DVD Collection
The library plans to develop this new collection at all 4 sites. It
will include approximately 400 items with a mix of high interest
titles, old and new musicals, and non - fiction films. These funds
will be in addition to funds received from the Friends of the
Library to establish the new collection.
$50,00 for New York Times on microfilm (1957 -68, printed indices).
The library has the New York Times on microfilm from 1969 to
present; 1851 -1899. Adding the film from 1957 -1968 would
greatly expand the library's coverage. The newspaper is well
used by customers of all ages; supports local school curriculum
and customer requests for primary source historical material.
The film for 1851 -1899 was purchased in support of the American
History collection (BET funds, FY 1998/99).
4 985 for Reference Books
In memory of Newport Beach librarian Marianne Yesk, reference
books will be purchased in her areas of interest and expertise.
These areas include the arts, fine art and modern dance,
European travel, and gourmet cooking.
2 985 for Knox Funds
In memory of Library Trustee Bob Knox, this funding will support
and enhance the heavily used children's and young adult non-
fiction collection is in constant demand by students in the
community as they work hard to complete their school
assignments.
75 for Memorial Books
In honor of former Library Literacy volunteer, Jack Dwan.
III. Funds in the amount of $25,000 to account 4010 -9000 for the Children's Room.
Account 4010 -9000. $25,000 for update of the Central Library Children's Room.
After eight years of very heavy use by children, parents, and
grandparents, the Children's Room at the Central Library shows
significant wear. Adding shelving for new formats and replacing
existing worn furniture will enhance using the library by parents
and children.
