FIRST BATTALION, FIRST MARINES, FIRST MARINE DIVISION
TO BE HONORED AND "ADOPTED" BY CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH DECEMBER 9, 2003
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — December 5, 2003 -- At the last City Council meeting of the year on
December 9, 2003, the City of Newport Beach will formally "adopt" the First Battalion, First Marines as
Mayor Steven Bromberg, who is a former Marine, presents a proclamation in Council Chambers, 3300
Newport Boulevard, to a representative of the First Battalion, First Marines stationed at Camp Pendleton
but currently serving in Southwest Asia.
Representing the First Battalion, First Marines in order of rank are:
"Colonel John Toolan — Commanding Officer of the First Marine Regiment
"First Lieutenant Victor Lomuscio — First Battalion, First Marines
"Sergeant Major William Kinney — First Marine Expeditionary Force
"Command Master Chief Robert Elliott — First Marine Expeditionary Force
"Sergeant Major Wayne Bell — First Marine Division
"Sergeant Stacy Liebsch — First Battalion, First Marines
Lieutenant Colonel Brian D. Beaudreault is the Commanding Officer of the First Battalion, First
Marines; however, in the Battalion's absence afloat, First Lieutenant Victor Lomuscio will formally accept
the written Proclamation from the Mayor along with the City's formal statement of gratitude for the First
Battalion, First Marines service to their country and the City's intention of "adopting" these servicemen as
part of ongoing communication and appreciation of all they do in the line of duty.

I" BATTALION, I" MARINES "ADOPTED" BY NEWPORT BEACH
WILL PRESENT PLAQUE TO CITY ONAUGUST101"AS GRATITUDE FOR SUPPORT
NEWPORT BEACH, CA — July 28, 2004 — The I" Battalion, I" Marine Regiment, I" Marine
Division adopted by the City of Newport Beach in December 2003 will officially express its appreciation to
our citizens during the presentation of a Unit Plaque to the City Council at its 7:00 p.m. meeting on August
10, 2004 in Council Chambers, 3300 Newport Boulevard, Newport Beach, CA.
1/1 Commanding Officer Lt. Colonel David Furness accompanied by Sergeant Major Rafael
Ventura will make the presentation to the citizens of Newport Beach represented by the Newport Beach
City Council. A special message from Major General James N. Mattis, Commanding General, I" Marine
Division, currently deployed in Iraq, will be read on behalf of the Division as well as a personal message
from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Michael W. Hagee. Other ranking officers and non-
commissioned officers are also expected to attend the ceremony to say thank you to the City for its ongoing
support of I/I Marines and sailors.
1/1 was activated on March 1, 1941, at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Battalion saw active service
in World War 11, Korea, Vietnam and in Southwest Asia /the Middle East The Unit Plaque will feature the
1/1 insignia which commemorates the Marine victory at Guadalcanal. The emblem contains the Southern
Cross, a "I" for the I" Marine Division, and two additional "Ps" representing the I" Battalion and the I"
Marine Regiment. 1/1 has two mottos: "First of the First' and "Ready to Fight'. 1/1 is currently
scheduled to re- deploy to Southwest Asia /the Middle East in December, 2004.
