SUBJECT: STATUS REPORT ON TRAFFIC FLOW OPTIMIZATION PROJECT
The City undertook a comprehensive Traffic Flow Optimization Project with several
goals in mind. The primary focus was to improve the coordination of traffic signals to
enhance the flow of traffic on the arterial roadways throughout the City. To this end,
every signal in the City was analyzed with regard to the adjacent signals. The result of
this analysis was a series of recommended changes, mostly minor, to the timing of the
majority of signals. This effort included the signals under the jurisdiction of Caltrans
and they were very cooperative in making the changes. in almost all cases, additional
fine tuning of the timing resulted from field observations.
The other components of this project included training staff in the use of signal timing
software, preliminary design for an enhanced traffic operations center, a review of state -
of- the -art technology that the City may want to consider due to the age of its current
equipment, review of operational improvements for the top ten most critical
intersections, and finally the preparation of an informational brochure suitable for
distribution to the general public explaining the benefits and constraints of improved
traffic signal timing.
The City's consultant, Meyer, Mohaddes Associates will present a Power Point
presentation explaining the project in greater detail. Both staff and the consultant will
be available for questions.
