Bludau, City Manager 949 - 644 -3000, hbludau(&city.newport- beach.ca.us SUBJECT: RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CITY OF ANAHEIM REGARDING THE NAME OF THE ANAHEIM ANGELS RECOMMENDATION: Approve the resolution which supports the City of Anaheim's efforts to retain the name • "Anaheim Angels" for our Orange County major league baseball team. DISCUSSION: At the Orange County Division meeting of the League of California Cities on November 19th, Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle asked all Orange County cities to adopt the attached resolution regarding the name /renaming of the Anaheim Angeles baseball team. He intends to provide all the resolutions adopted by Orange County cities to Angel owner Artie Moreno, and believes that it could make a difference. With the enjoyment and pride that many Newport Beach residents have in attending and watching Angel games both in person and on television, the City Manager felt is appropriate to bring this resolution forward for City Council consideration. Bludifu, City Manager Attachment: Resolution RESOLUTION NO. 2004 -_ • A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTING THE CITY OF ANAHEIM'S EFFORTS TO KEEP THE NAME "ANAHEIM ANGELS" AS THE NAME OF THE ANAHEIM ANGELS WHEREAS, in 1961, Gene Autry purchased a team franchise from Major League Baseball which team was located in the City of Los Angeles and was named the Los Angeles Angels; and WHEREAS, the team was relocated by Gene Autry from the City of Los Angeles to the City of Anaheim and, with the beginning of the 1966 baseball season, commenced playing its home games in Anaheim Stadium as the California Angels; and WHEREAS, in 1996, the then team owner and the City of Anaheim executed a long -term agreement arranging for the team to continue playing its home games in the City of Anaheim, providing for the City to contribute more than $20,000,000 toward the remodeling of Anaheim Stadium, and requiring the team name to include the name "Anaheim" commencing with the 1997 baseball season; and WHEREAS, in conformance with its contractual obligations, the then team owner changed the team name from the California Angels to the Anaheim Angels by • which name such team has been known, branded and identified since 1997; and WHEREAS, in 2002 the Anaheim Angels baseball team won its first, and to date, only Major League Baseball World Series championship, wearing "Anaheim" jerseys in ballparks across the nation; and WHEREAS, the Anaheim Angels name brings economic benefits to the community relating to, among other things, national and international recognition, tourism, conventions, and business; and WHEREAS, after the 2003 baseball season, the Anaheim Angels baseball team was purchased by a new owner; and WHEREAS, news stories and other public reports indicate that the current team owner is considering a change of the team name to a name other than the "Anaheim Angels" and adding the name "Los Angeles" to the team name; and WHEREAS, the City of Los Angeles has a Major League Baseball team, the "Los Angeles Dodgers," which has played its home games in Los Angeles since 1958; and • WHEREAS, on November 17, 2004, the City Council of the City of Los • Angeles unanimously adopted its Resolution No. 04 -2354 opposing any renaming of the Anaheim Angels to include the name "Los Angeles" and expressing its support of the City of Anaheim in its efforts to ensure that the team name remains the Anaheim Angels. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Newport Beach City Council expresses its support for the City of Anaheim in its efforts to keep the team name "Anaheim Angels" as the name of the Anaheim Angels. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the City of Anaheim, the Anaheim Angels, and the Commissioner of Major League Baseball.
