HomeMy WebLinkAbout13 - Reclassification to Full Time Department Assistant in City Managers OfficeCITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT Agenda Item No. 13 April 12, 2005 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: Office of the City Manager Homer Bludau, City Manager 644 -3000, hbludau @city.newport- beach.ca.us SUBJECT: Reclassification of City Manager's Office Part -Time Department Assistant to Full Time RECOMMENDATION: Approve reclassification of position from part-time to full -time Department Assistant. DISCUSSION: The City Manager's Office currently has clerical support staff consisting of the Executive Assistant to the City Manager, an Administrative Assistant and a part-time Department Assistant. The part-time Department Assistant position began as a volunteer position that assisted with telephone, reception and public information duty. A part-time paid position was created in 1999 because activity in the Manager's Office increased and there was a need to have more consistency in clerical support. Over the years, hours have been added to provide the clerical support needed for an Assistant City Manager's relocation from the Planning Department to the Manager's Office and the addition of a Public Information Officer. The current budget provides for 37.5 hours per week, making this part-time position nearly a full -time one. With current projects managed by the City Manager's Office involving citizen committees and /or other significant public participation, which require clerical assistance for managing agendas, minutes and public notices, I believe it is time for the Department Assistant to be a full -time position. The total increase, including salary and benefits, would be $7,106. Funding Availability: The 2004 -05 budget has salary savings sufficient to pay the additional salary and benefit costs of the full -time position for the remainder of this fiscal year. If the City Council approves this action, full costs will be included in the 2005 -06 budget. Submitted by: Homer L. Blud u City Manager
