HomeMy WebLinkAbout26 - Naming Park Located Behind Newport Beach Central LibraryCITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT Agenda Item No. 26 (June 14, 2005) TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: Recreation and Senior Services Marie Knight, Director- 644 -3157 - mknight @city.newport- beach.ca.us SUBJECT: Naming of Park Located behind the Newport Beach Central Library RECOMMENDATION: The Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission recommends that the City Council consider naming the park located behind the Newport Beach Central Library from one of the following three suggestions and /or select one from the entire list of 425 names: Centennial Park Newport Beach Central Park Newport Central Park BACKGROUND The naming of the park site that is located behind the Newport Beach Central Library was discussed at the March 15, 2005 Park Development Committee meeting and at that time the Committee decided to obtain input from the community on the name for the park. Staff worked with the Daily Pilot on an article that ran April 5t' and also in the Newport Navigator inviting the public to submit appropriate names. DISCUSSION Four hundred and twenty -five suggestions were received, with only a handful of duplicates. The Park Development Committee met on May 17, 2005 and recommended that the Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission forward to City Council: Centennial Park Newport Beach Central Park Newport Central Park At the June 7, 2005 Parks, Beaches & Recreation Commission meeting, it was recommended that those three names along with the entire list be forwarded to the City Council for their decision. Vista Point Park Vista Pointe Amphitheater Park White Water Ridge Park WE NAMING OF CITY PARKS Et FACILITIES The City of Newport Beach has a comprehensive program to provide park and open space to serve the leisure and recreation needs of residents. It is desirable that appropriate names be selected for future parks and public recreational facilities. The following guidelines shall serve as policy on this matter. A. Suggestions for naming new or existing parks or public facilities shall be reviewed by the Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission with a recommendation being transmitted to the City Council for approval. B. New or existing park or public facilities names can be chosen from, but not limited to, the following categories: 1. Streets or schools bordering park 2. Topography 3. Theme 4. Common names already in place for the area C. Facility rooms or site amenities may be dedicated in honor of persons if done as part of a capital /fundraising campaign and with the approval of the City Council. The provisions of this policy shall not apply to commitments made prior to May 13, 2003.
