RECOMMENDATION: Adopt Resolution -_ requesting a $15,000 grant from the California Coastal Commission for new educational material. 2. Direct staff to implement educational material /development program if the whale tale grant application is approved by the Coastal Commission. BACKGROUND: Currently, the Harbor Resources Division of the City of Newport Beach offers an educational program that teaches elementary students about tidepools and the marine animals associated with them. There is no current program aimed at high school students that emphasizes the importance of the tidepools or keeping the environment clean. The proposed program seeks to transcend basic chemistry teaching behind the 'how's' and teach the next generation of adults (the high school students) the application of chemistry in the real world, the importance of a healthy environment in a delicate biosphere, remind students that what they do at home directly affects their local beaches, in turn empowering them to take action at home to positively affect watersheds near them.
