• A real life example:
Clara* — 42 years old
Born in the Central America, Clara came to California 20 years ago. She has
been working as a dental assistant in NB. In a recent performance review,
her supervisor told her that her English skills were thwarting her career
advancement. The office manager referred Clara to the central library for
help. Clara went to the library that same day where she found her way to the
literacy office. She has been working with a tutor for about 6 months and
has already assumed new responsibilities at work.
To assure Clara's confidentiality, her identity has been changed.
In the first 6 months of FY 2007 our learners
•
met many goals including:
• Read a book, magazine, or newspaper for
the first time
■
• Got their first library cards
• Ordered from a restaurant menu without assistance
• 1 • Became U.S. citizen
• Obtained a California driver's license
•
Community awareness
Increased support
New learning resources
• Classroom space
Volunteer tutors
•
(there is always a waiting list of
adult learners!!!)
