SUBJECT: BUDGET AMENDMENT TO ACCEPT A CHECK FROM THE NEWPORT
BEACH LIBRARY FOUNDATION AND APPROPRIATE FUNDS FOR
MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS BUDGET FOR FY 2006107.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve a Budget Amendment to increase revenue estimates by $166,000 in Account
No. 4090 -5893 (NBPL Foundation Donations) and increase expenditure estimates by
the same amount in Division 4090, Foundation.
DISCUSSION:
The Newport Beach Public Library has received a gift of $500,000, approved by the
Library Board of Trustees on April 17, 2007. The gift will be received and deposited in
three increments into 4090 (NBPL Foundation) expenditure accounts. This gift is
restricted by the anonymous donor to the purchase of Central Library materials and with
the understanding that there would be no fiscal impact on the library budget.
4090 -8260 Library Materials $166,000
Children's Award Winning and Classic Picture Books 1 $6,000
This is one of our highest circulating collections and many titles were weeded recently
for condition. Our children's population is growing more rapidly than anyone could have
predicted. We believe establishing early.reading skills is vital and to make reading a
good experience we need to make this collection whole.
1 Children's Classic Fiction { $2,0001
Class assignments have increased demand for children's classic fiction titles. These
titles are the tried and true works of literature which orient children to our culture.
Board Books 1 $3,0001
We serve very young children and their parents through our "Books and Babies" programs.
Additional sessions will be added in the coming year because of the program's popularity.
The Board Books used in this program are designed for hard use, but we need both
replacement titles and new titles to serve the community.
Bookshelf Books 1 $20,000
These books are for young people (students) and are directly related to their curriculum.
Several students usually need the same book at the same time so we would purchase
multiple copies of classic works such as Silas Marner. We would also purchase a number
of works that are on the middle school and high school reading lists which we do not
currently own.
Adult Materials /Adult Non - Fiction Items 1 $30,000
The subject fields of science, medicine, health and law must be updated to be useful. In an
era when people Google for untested and often incorrect answers, it is critical that the library
keep current, authenticated and relevant materials available for patrons. A large donation
would allow us to bring this very expensive collection completely up to date. One of the
primary ways to evaluate a library is to review how current its non - fiction collection is.
Large Print Books I $25,000
We have a population of active readers whose vision is not what it used to be. They
quickly read, re -read and wear out our large print books. They need and request a
refreshed collection with new titles.
Genre Fiction
Genre fiction, especially mysteries, is one of our most circulated collections. Devoted fans
not only read current authors, but also search for older materials, particularly series.
Because of their popularity these books wear out and require constant replacement. To
avoid having our readers wait two and three months to see a title we would order multiple
copies of current authors. A large infusion of funds will be gratefully received by our patrons.
Audio Books
Many of our patrons commute to work and go on driving vacations. Others have vision
problems or simply prefer to have books read to them. This form of book is so popular we
have trouble keeping them on the shelf.
DVD's 1 $30,0001
The traditional video format is no longer being published and we need to replace our videos
with DVD's. We are especially concerned about replacing educational and instructional
materials which are heavily used by parents and teachers and which tend to be pricy. We
are also interested in making some of the classic movies available to our customers.
This expensive replacement project would be possible with your donor's generous gift.
