From: Laura Curran [mailto:lauracurran(alme.com] Sent: Monday, March 23, 2015 10:01 AM To: Scott Peotter; Curry, Keith; Selich, Edward Cc: Dept - City Council; Kiff, Dave; Badum, Steve Subject: Plans for New CdM Library ? Scott, Keith and Ed: At the 3/19/15 CdMRA meeting we had a discussion about the Plans for New CdM Library. I think you had all left by that time (It was a long meeting.) At the meeting, Jerry King, Board Member, reported on the planning progress; the takeaways were: 1. the Fire Department has already met with Public Works and provided specifications regarding layout and features, - Example - Fire Department unwilling to accept a public Meeting Room accessible form the Library on 2nd Floor. - Example - a separate dormitory for men and women 2. The Library Staff and Board have had limited input, and the Budget for the Library is limited and set and modifications cannot be made. Tim Netherton diSCLIssed that the amount of space for the Library may be reduced due to efficiencies which are available. - A 2nd Story Meeting Room is'off the table' due to Fire Deparment concerns. Is that a lost opportunity? If a 2nd Story Meeting Room makes sense, let's build it now, upfront. 3. The Plans for the Library have not been made available to public or Library Staff. Tim Netherton mentioned that there will be a Public Meeting on April 24. What is the scope of the meeting? Will residents be presented with a fait accompli, or will this be an opportunity for residents to provide input. Suggestion was made that a scale model of the proposed facility, with opportunities for input, should be place in the Library Lobby, similar to the process for the Central Library. This item is on the March 24 agenda and per Dave Kiffs note this weekend the planning is in 'the early stages' and there is still time for public input and modifications. I ask you to please work with CcIMRA and Community Groups to ensure that there is a robust public discussion about the community needs and plans for the facility so that we build in all the necessary functionality now and don't look back with hindsight, wishing we had built the facility differently. As a ten year CDM resident and mother of two, I urge you to remember "little things matter". The CDM library might be small, but the effect it has on our community is great I began taking my younger daughter to the local library when she was only a couple of months old, pushing her in the stroller as an escape to get out of the house for a few hours. However, our mother /daughter trips to the library grew into something magical! Soon she was learning to walk. The day she walked all the way to the library on her own was a triumph! Pretty soon she was riding her scooter to the library. Next came biking, and finally getting to use the bike rack outside. It's not important how she got there, what is important is what happened inside. We've spent countless hour coloring, doing puzzles, playing with legos, and making arts and crafts. We've attended stimulating story times where we sang, danced, laughed, and even practiced yoga! We've learned lessons like sharing, respecting property, quiet voices, and manners. We've seen entertaining shows with animals, musicians, singers, and dancers. We've learned about a computer, keyboard, and a mouse. We've made lasting friendships. All of these activities are wonderful, but my favorite is curling up in a quiet comer with my child and reading! The greatest gift to give a child is a love for reading. I urge the community, library, and city to work together to create a space to make magical memories for years to come!
