Why are the ordinances needed?
-Minimize the introduction of non-domesticated animals into the
urbanized area of Newport Bay where continuous inhabitation
may cause problems related to:
• water quality (fecal pollution and oil pollution with
sinking vessels),
• property damage,
• human safety,
• noise,
• smell,
• damage to in-bay

What have been the most
effective ways to deal with
sea lions?

1. Harbor Patrol and Harbor Resources notify
the permittee of any sea lion problem on
moored vessels or docks and request the
owner to move vessel or install deterrent
measures.

What are the primary features
of the proposed ordinances?
1. Direct or indirect feeding of non - domesticated animals prohibited
a. Washing down vessels containing fish parts
b. Pumping bait out of holding tanks
c. Depositing food, refuse, fish or fish parts into the Bay
2. Vessel security on moorings from sea lions
a. Vessel owner is given notice to employ appropriate deterrent measures
b. Enforcement by Harbor Resources staff via Administrative Citations
3. Pier (residential and commercial) security from sea lions
a. Pier owner is given notice to employ appropriate deterrent measures
b. Enforcement via Administrative Citations
4. Public information bulletin
a. Recommended deterrent measures posted on the City's website
b. Prototype motion detector activated low voltage sprinkler system for

• Please do not harass the sea lions, in any way
• Please do not feed sea lions
• If you see someone else feeding sea lions, then
please remind them that this activity causes many
problems in our bay
• If you own a boat or dock, then please check it at
least weekly for signs or sea lion use and then
refer to the City's website for appropriate
deterrent measures
• Please be mindful that the "ocean begins at your
front door" and don't wash anything from your
property, dock or boat that could find its way into
the bay.
• Please do not throw anything overboard when
enjoying the waters of our bay
