Newport Beach Art Exhibition and Sale - a Great Success
The City Arts Commission hosted the annual Newport Beach Art Exhibition and Sale last weekend. Artists
preregistered up to 2 pieces of art in the categories of painting/mixed media, photography and sculpture.
Many thanks go to Commissioners Arlene Greer and Carole Boller who chaired the committee for this
event. Commissioner Greer arranged for beautiful flowers from Bellagio Florists and also for the
outstanding reception delicacies from Bristol Farms.
Carole Boller had arranged for artist and educator, Tom Lamb (currently has a photography exhibition,

Each of the award winning entries were placed that evening
in the hallway at Oasis Senior Center and the work will be
on display through June. Staff had received many compliments from the public on Oasis as a great venue,
and many thanks go to the outstanding staff at Oasis for their excellent support.
Many thanks also to the girls from National Charity League, and
members of the NB Arts Foundation who assisted in checking in the
artists and placing the art.

Concert.
Searching for Democracy
On Tuesday, April 24, the Newport Beach Public Library welcomed Constitutional scholar and author,
Professor Richard Beeman of Penn State and director of the California Center for the Book, Mary Menzel to
the stage at Central Library. Both participated in a free, standing-room only,A‘ uthor-in-Conversation’A

available at the library along with books on democracy
and government.
Additional events will coincide with this grant leading up to the Presidential elections including (for
children) collages on democracy at Imagination Celebration on Saturday, May 19 (Mariners Library), and a
film screening at Central: Stories of an Undeclared War by Erin Gruwell on May 22. Replicas of the U.S.
Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and Articles of Confederation are on display in the Plexi-
glass cabinets on the 2nd floor at Central. The opportunity to hear Dr. Beeman and Mary Menzel was made
possible through a grant from CalHumanities, which was matched with funds from the NB Library
Foundation.
Craig Newton Family Performance
Last Saturday, Craig Newton presented a delightful performance tracing
best-loved American music through the years for an appreciative audience of
music makers and song singers. Craig must have played at least 10
instruments expertly and provided the children an opportunity to try some
of his music-makers. After the performance at Central Craig took the whole
show on the road, and performed that afternoon at the Balboa Branch
Library.
