Harpist Charissa Barger will present a family concert at Central Library on Saturday, September 22 from 11- 12pm. Charissa has established herself as an inspiring performing artist and dedicated arts educator in Southern California. Her technical mastery and expressive playing keep her in high demand as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. As an ambassador for new music, Charissa has premiered numerous works, collaborated with composers and performed for innovative concerts and recordings. She is an enthusiastic educator and seeks to use music as a tool to help students reach their high potentials. Charissa currently lives in Los Angeles where she is a candidate for the Master of Music degree at the University of Southern California. She received an Artist Diploma from the prestigious Colburn Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, where she was a Rogel scholar. Fifty registrants will visit “Cleopatra,AtheAExhibition” and take part in a docent-led tour, catered lunch and group screening of the IMAX filmA“MysteriesAofAEgypt”. In the next couple of months Cultural Arts will be coordinating a winter tour to the Norton Simon Museum where VanAGogh’sA famousA“SelfAPortrait”,A(1889)AwillAbeAonAloanAfromAtheANationalAGalleryAofA rtAinA Washington D.C. Cultural Arts Grant Applications Due Friday, September 28, applications for the 2012-13 Cultural Arts Grant programAwillAbeAdueAinAtheA rtsACoordinator’sAofficeAbyA4pm:AATheA applications have been advertised and will support cultural arts programs for citizens ofANewportABeach:AALastAyear’sACulturalA rtsAGrantsA recipients were ExplorOcean, Baroque Music Festival, South Coast Repertory Theater, Southland Opera, Festival Ballet Theatre, Newport Beach Film Festival and the Newport/Mesa YMCA. Arts Commissioners will be considering grant proposals and funding levels at their October meeting. In November, their recommendations will go to City Council for final approval and checks will be presented at a subsequent City Council meeting. Beautiful Siren, Tragic Lover, Powerful Queen, Who Was the Real Cleopatra? Tuesday,AOctoberA2AstaffAhadAcoordinatedAtheA rtsACommission’sAmuseumAtourAtoA“Cleopatra.ATheAExhibition”A at the California Science Center. Fifty people attended on a rather warm October day, including Arts Commissioners Caroline Logan, husband Hugh, and Rita Goldberg. Most fascinating was the discovery of ancient relics related to Cleopatra in the sea near Alexandria, from tiny gold coins to colossal statues. These finds give us an intriguing glimpse of ancient Egypt in the days before its final conquest by Rome – and tell us more about the intriguing Queen of Egypt. Also included in the tour was a lunch in the Rose Garden Café and aAviewingAofAtheAIM XAfilmA“MysteriesAofAEgypt”Afeaturing Omar Sharif and granddaughter. Cultural Arts Grants Program On Friday, September 28 applications for the 2012-2013 Cultural Arts Grant Program were due in the Cultural Arts Office. Eleven organizations have applied for grants and the applications were processed by staff and sent to the Arts Commission for review (applications are available to read in the Administrative Office at Central Library.) The Arts Commission will be reviewing the applications all week before their regular meeting on OctoberA11:AA tAthatAtimeAtheyAwillAmakeArecommendationsAforAthisAyear’sAfunding:AAOnANovemberA 13, the recommendations will be provided to City Council for approval. Arts Commissioner Tour the Civic Center The City Arts Commission, members of the Library Board of Trustees and staff were able to tour the new Civic Center and Park on Thursday, October 4. Assistant City Manager Steve Badum, Library Director Cynthia Cowell, architects, and contractors for the new site were able to lead the group through the amazing structures and explain many of the building and park features. Guitar Virtuoso Joseph Yashar to Play this Sunday, October 7 at 3pm for Musicale Joseph Yashar started playing the guitar at the age of 12. Primarily self-taught since then, he continued his musical education at Orange Coast College, and was the recipient of several scholarships for private studies. His repertoire contains internationally celebrated virtuoso masterpieces from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods. Joseph is also well versed in a collection of Spanish, Latin and new classical guitar music, including his own original compositions and arrangements.
