This month the Arts Commissioners considered a painting donation from a local artist, and also the acceptance of two sculptures for permanent loan from Deutsche Bank. Commissioner Smith had made contact with Deutsche Bank through the Orange County Museum of Art and introduced photos of the sculptures to the Library Board and Arts Commission in anticipation of accepting the sculptures to be placed on public property somewhere in the City. At the October meeting Commissioners asked Mr: Smith to form a “master plan committee” to review these kinds of offers, to ensure that there is a cohesive plan for public art installation. Commissioners Logan, Goldberg and Boller were appointed to the committee. Guppy Ware Did you know…when California became a state in 1848, the demand for ceramic products grew rapidly as people moved in? Buildings needed roofs, floors, and pipes and the ceramic industry grew as the demand increased. The "Golden Era in tile making" and art pottery, influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, was around 1910. Helen Stiles wrote in 1941, "Tile has long been a favorite building material in California. The early Spanish who settled here brought with them a love of bright-colored tile. Spanish, Mexican, and the attending Chinese design of the 17th and 18th centuries have all influenced the decoration of tile and other pottery in California." During the months of January and February, Cultural Arts will display several mid-century modern dishware sets and books on pottery made in California at Central Library. Of particular note are these plates by Roy and Harriet Guppy, called “Guppy Ware”, produced in their Corona del Mar pottery between the 1940s and 1950s! The Guppy’s were best known for their “Island Ware” line, an earthy line which featured square plates and very bright colors. Krechkovsky/Loucks Duo, January 13 The Krechkovsky & Loucks Duo features talented violinist Iryna Krechkovsky and pianist Kevin Kwan Loucks. In 2012 the Duo was selected by the Consortium of Southern California Chamber Music Presenters as winners of the prestigious Beverly Hills Auditions for 2012/13.
