Newport Beach City Arts Commission
Thursday, April 11, 2013 – 5:00pm
Central Library Conference Room
Convened at 5:00pm
1) Call Meeting to Order:
Chairperson Smith called the meeting to order.
2) Roll Call:
Commissioners Present: Chairperson Robert Smith, Vice Chair Rita Goldberg, Secretary
Carole Boller, Arlene Greer, Gilbert Lasky, Caroline Logan, Chris Trela.
Commissioners Absent: None
Staff Present: Councilperson Nancy Gardner; Library Director Cynthia Cowell,
Library Services Manager Tim Hetherton
Public Present: Jim Mosher
3) Public Comments:
Mr. Mosher stated the importance of The Brown Act. He commented on the Bunny sculptures
and inquired as to the acquisition of them.
Councilperson Gardner encouraged the Arts Commissioners to take up the challenge of
decorating Council Chambers with art and would like suggestions to be offered to the City
Council.
4) Approval of Minutes: It was MSP (Logan/Greer) to approve the March 11, 2013 Minutes
5) Current Business:
A. Consent Calendar
1. Cultural Arts Activities –Boller read the provided updated report for Cultural Arts
activities in March, 2013.
2. Correspondence and Press – Boller passed around current correspondence to the
Commission.
B. Items for Review and Possible Action –
1. Recommendation to City Council on I 13- all matters policy created amended and to be
approved
2. Report on the sculpture agreement with OCMA and city. The Uprooted sculpture will be
installed on a location to be decided before May 4th.

C. Monthly Reports –
1. Art in Public Spaces/Historical Preservation Ad Hoc Subcommittee – Report already
given.
2. Fine Arts Ad Hoc Subcommittee – The Newport Beach Art Exhibition and Sale was
a. Discussed by Secretary Boller. Arts Commissioners and Arts Foundation
assignments have been sent out for April 13. Boller also noted the Michael Henn
would be giving out the awards during the event.
b. Commissioner Greer also discussed the Hilbert Exhibition, which was coming up
soon. Greer also noted that commissioners had discussed giving a reception for Mr.
Hilbert, probably during the second art installation cycle. Mr. Hilbert will also have a
collection installed in the art boxes.
3. Performing Arts Ad Hoc Subcommittee –Commission Vice Chair Rita Goldberg reported
the programs in the park were in order.
4. Museum Tour Ad Hoc Subcommittee–Commissioner Rita Goldberg reported the next
Museum tour would be in the fall.
5. Arts Foundation Liaison Ad Hoc Subcommittee – Commissioner Greer reported that the
foundation Art in the Park event would take place on October 12 at the Civic Center.
6. Publicity Ad Hoc Committee –Commissioner Trela reported the Exhibition newspaper
coverage. He also added he would take photos of at the exhibit again this year. Chris
also commented on Commissioner Goldberg's affiliation with a new magazine.
7. Budget Ad Hoc Committee – No report
8. Cultural Arts Grant Ad Hoc Committee – Commissioner Greer had no report.
9. Master Plan Ad Hoc Committee for Visual & Public Art Installations – Commissioner
Logan reported that the subcommittee was working on updating the City’s policies and
procedures for acquiring art as well as creating a comprehensive application form for all
City art acquisitions. The committee is also moving ahead with the master plan for
potential art site selections.
