Home My WebLink About10 - 2006 Byrne GrantCITY OF NEWPORT BEACH CITY COUNCIL STAFF REPORT Agenda Item No. 10 October 10, 2006 TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL FROM: Mike Hyams, Support Services Division Commander Bob McDonell, Chief of Police SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE 2006 BYRNE GRANT Accept for administrative purposes, the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs 2006 Byrne Grant Award in the total amount of $24,681 for the Orange County Integrated Law and Justice Project. 2. Authorize the Administrative Services Director to establish revenue and expenditure accounts in the Capital Improvement Budget to facilitate the administration of these grants funds. 3. Authorize the Chief of Police to sign the FY06 Office of Justice Programs 2006 Byrne Grant Award Acceptance Form, accepting the Grant Allocation. DISCUSSION: Background: The Newport Beach Police Department and Police Chief Bob McDonell have been actively involved in the Orange County Integrated Law and Justice Project for over eight years. Currently, Chief McDonell serves as Chairman of the Integrated Law and Justice Agencies of Orange County (ILJAOC), the joint powers authority responsible for this project involving every municipal police department, the Sheriff's Department, and every facet of the criminal court system. On March 9, 2004 Council authorized the transfer of three COPS Technology Grants (2001, 2002 and 2003) for administrative purposes to the City of Newport Beach. The total amount of these three grants is $1,989,148. These funds are being used in the development of several projects as identified in the comprehensive Strategic Plan of the Orange County Integrated Law and. Justice Project. On October 26, 2004 the Council accepted the COPS 2004 Technology Grant in the amount of $296,843 to fully integrate information systems throughout the law 2006 Byrne Grant Award October 10, 2006 Page 2 enforcement and criminal justice agencies in Orange County. On January 10"', 2006 the Council accepted the COPS 2005 Technology Grant in the amount of $246,661 to initiate the integration and automation of the Case Filing System throughout all the county and local criminal justice agencies. The funds provided by this Office of Justice Programs 2006 Byrne Grant will be used to supplement the funding for the implementation of the countywide case filing system. This system will allow all criminal justice agencies the ability to file cases and transfer documents across the multitude of diverse computerized systems in existence today.
