Newport Beach Fire Department - "Safety, Service, Professionalism" Disaster Preparedness Mailer • City-wide mailer sent to all 54,000 residential addresses in Newport Beach • "Partners in Preparedness" • What residents can do before, during, and after a disaster occurs • Directions on how to create a Disaster Supply Kit • Tsunami Safety Rules • Fire Department training opportunities for residents Newport Beach Fire Department - "Safety, Service, Profession /ism" Community Outreach Programs Basic Disaster Preparedness Presentation Neighborhood Disaster Preparedness Course • Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Newport Beach Fire Department - "Safety, Service, Professionalism" E Basic Disaster Preparedness Presentation • Most commonly requested presentation • Target audience: Presentation available to any requesting group (home owners associations, businesses, civic groups, etc.) • Presentation tailored to groups request /needs • Presentation time varies depending upon request /needs (usually 30 minutes to 1 hour) ;. Fire, Flood, Earthquake, Tsunami. Emergency Management Plan (EMP) which includes: • All hazards • All functions • All response organizations • States how the City will operate in a disaster • Updated every 3 years, next update 2007 Ensure Employees meet all Federal and State Training Requirements National Incident Management System (NIMS) • 825 full time Employees have completed all the requirements Monthly Training for all new City Employees • Disaster Service Worker (DSW) responsibilities • City's role in a disaster • Basic disaster preparedness I Newport Beach Fire Department - "Safety, Service, Professionalism" City Disaster Preparedness • Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) • The City Emergency Preparedness Committee (EPC) has been established as an informal group to provide information, tools, solutions, and the forum to solve problems and issues resulting from emergencies. • Representative from every department • Meets monthly i Newport Beach Fire Department - "Safety, Service, Professionalism" IN Tsunami Warning • Tsunami Warning • Occurred on June 14th • Offshore 90 miles off the coast of Crescent City • Standard Tsunami Warning was issued to the California coast due to the magnitude of the earthquake • Non Event • Police Dispatch received over 600 calls • Lifeguards cleared the beaches as a precautionary measure Newport Beach Fire Department - 'Safety, Service, Professionalism" Response to Tsunami Warning • Tsunami Incident Action Plan (IAP) which includes: • Response for the first 12 hours of a tsunami warning. • Instructions on how the City will receive a tsunami warning. • How public safety and key personnel will respond: • Evacuation • Alerting & Warning • Sheltering • Maps of evacuation routes, inundation areas, employee inbound routes. • Tsunami tabletop exercise was held on May 4, 2006 to test the plan. Newport Beach Fire Department - "Safety, Service, Professionalism" 7 Tsunami Ready Program • Tsunami Ready Program • A National Weather Service (NWS) initiative that promotes tsunami hazard preparedness as an active collaboration among federal, state, and local emergency management agencies, the public, and the NWS tsunami warning system. • This collaboration supports better and more consistent tsunami awareness and mitigation efforts among communities at risk. • The main goal is improvement of public safety during tsunami emergencies.
