SUBJECT: ACCEPTANCE OF FUNDS AND AUTHORIZATION TO
PURCHASE A POLICE SERVICE DOG (PSD)
RECOMMENDATION:

DISCUSSION:
The Police. Department was approached by members of the Newport Harbor Elks
Lodge #1767, who indicated interest in making a restricted public donation to
assist the Department in purchasing a Police Service Dog. The Police Service
Dog not only assists officers in the detection and apprehension of suspects, but
also assists in the locating of evidence and illegal narcotics. The Police Service
Dog is also utilized by the Department as a public relations tool at the annual
Open House, as well as public appearances at local events and recruiting fairs.
The Newport Harbor Elks Lodge was advised that the overall cost to purchase
and train the PSD and handler would be $15,000. The Newport Harbor Elks
Lodge membership ultimately voted in favor of donating the entire $15,000
amount.
