Staff continued coordinating construction projects regarding MacArthur Boulevard, Castaways Park, Balboa Boulevard medians between 14th and 16th Streets, the Pacific Coast Highway and Newport Boulevard Bridge/Interchange Project, and Sunset View Park with the Public Works Department. 2. Staff placed all soccer goals and installed field lines for baseball, football, and soccer upcoming seasons. 3. Irrigation renovation and plant replacements were completed by staff at various sites in the Parks system. 4. Staff continued coordinating the annual control of rodents by contract • services at various sites throughout the Parks system. 5. Contract aeration and top dressing was completed at Bonita Creek Park and Lincoln Athletic Center in preparation of the upcoming soccer and football seasons. 6. Staff coordinated with the Community Services Department for the opening of Bob Henry Park on August 17. 7. Contractual turf maintenance which includes mowing of all parks and facilities commenced on August 11. 8. Staff coordinated the placement of donated benches at Inspiration Point, Lookout Point, and Balboa Island Park. 9. Landscape and irrigation renovation was completed at Kings Road Park by staff and contract services to complement the recent stairway replacement project. UpcominAr Activities for September 1. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground covers will continue Citywide. • • 2. Staff will continue to coordinate the installation of recycled wood chips in all City medians and roadsides for weed control, water conservation, and recycling purposes. Tree Division Activities During the month of August, 654 trees were trimmed, 13 trees were removed, 4 trees were planted, 8 emergency calls were responded to regarding trees and 175 tree maintenance requests were received by the Urban Forester. 1. Tree removals were performed at these various locations during the month: 4645 Camden Drive - Two trees removed due to property damage. No replacement trees planted due to location. 10 Drakes Bay Drive - One dead tree removed. One replacement tree planted. Bolsa Park - One dead tree removed. One replacement tree planted. 501 San Bernardino Avenue - Five dead trees removed, due to lack of water by new property owner. No replacement trees planted. • 236 Heliotrope Avenue - One dead tree removed. One replacement tree planted. 430 Heliotrope Avenue- One dead tree removed. One replacement tree planted. 2600 Lighthouse Lane - One tree removed due to property damage. No replacement tree planted due to location. 719 Jasmine Avenue- One dead tree removed. No replacement tree planted due to location. 2. The City tree trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, will continue working within the Baycrest and Westcliff areas. 3. The Urban Forester coordinated the Citywide Sidewalk Replacement Program with the General Services Department Concrete Supervisor. This involved the Urban Forester inspecting City street trees as related to sidewalk repairs. 4. The new City Council Policy G -1 requires that notification be made to the Commission prior to any tree removals 30 days in advance. The following trees and locations are scheduled for removal in October: a. 1919 Commodore Road - One tree (Red Gum Eucalyptus) recommended for • removal due to property damage. No replacement tree to be planted due to adjacent location of water and sewer service line. I '), • b. 2334 Aralia Street - Two trees (Brazilian Pepper) recommended for removal due to hardscape repairs. Replacement trees to be planted once hardscape has been removed and new tree sites are determined. c. 436 Snug Harbor Road- One tree (Siberian Elm) recommended for removal due to extensive decay. Replacement tree to be planted pending approval by the Commission for a new designated street tree since the current designated street tree is the same type which is undesirable and prone to rapid decay. d. 1917 Seadrift Drive - One tree (Rusty Leaf Fig) recommended for removal due to extensive decay. No replacement tree to be planted due to location. e. 1833 Port Renwick Place - One tree (Carrotwood) recommended for removal due to sewer damage. No replacement tree to be planted due to location. f. 1121 Nottingham Road - One tree (Rusty Leaf Fig) recommended for removal due to sewer damage. No replacement tree to be planted due to location. g. 1912 Irvine Avenue - One tree (Desert Gum Eucalyptus) recommended for removal due to sewer damage.
