Friends of OASIS Fundraising Activities - The friends of OASIS are currently working on two
fundraising activities. The first is recycling of newspapers which has become an important ongoing
activity. The collection bin, placed in the parking lot, fills up quickly and raises approximately
$120 each month. The second, the annual Rummage Sale, will be held in October, but articles are
already being collected. The sale requires a large corps of volunteers and raises approximately
$10,000 each year.
Creative Writing - OASIS has an active Creative Writing Class that has encouraged many talented
writers. This month the class submitted an unfinished story to the August 'OASIS newsletter and
invited readers to submit completed work. The class will select the best - written piece and publish
it in the newsletter. This activity allows homebound and active people the opportunity to
participate.
Board Hospitality - The new Friends of OASIS Board is developing programs to ensure that people
feel welcome at the Center. One element of this plan is the hosting of social gatherings to which
new and old members are invited to learn more about the Center's activities. The first of these
gatherings was held August 22; it incorporated an ice -cream social and a Sunday movie. The OASIS
staff appreciates all the efforts of the Friends of OASIS in adding to the excellence of the Center.
Autumn Country Fair - OASIS will be holding a Country Fair on September 1, from 11:30am to 2pm.
A BBQ lunch, a bake off, games and a traditional Blue Grass band are all part of the event.
Gazebo Dedication - The gazebo is complete and will be dedicated on October 1 at 8:30am. The
funds to re -build this structure came from the Friends of OASIS Memorial fund in the name of Grant
Howald. A plaque, which honors his involvement with the formation of the OASIS Center, is set in
the entry of the gazebo. All donors and Center participants are welcome to attend the dedication
ceremony.
Shelter Management - On August 25, the Senior Services Manager was phoned by the police watch
commander and asked to open a shelter for 30 evacuated residents in Dover Shores. A shooting
incident took place that night and the suspect was barricaded in the neighborhood. The Manager
drove to OASIS at 12:30am to open the facility to serve as a shelter. Shortly after arriving, the
suspect was taken into custody and the shelter was no longer needed.
