Parks and Trees Divisions
September 1999 Activities Report
Park Division Activities
1. Staff continued coordinating construction projects regarding Bonita Canyon Park,
the two Gateway Parks, Grant Howald Park Ballfield Renovation Project, Seashore
Street End Improvement Project, and the Irvine Avenue Median Improvement
Project with the Public Works Department.
2. Staff completed irrigation renovation and plant replacements at various sites.
1. Field improvements for the upcoming soccer season including
aerification, fertilization, installing field lines and setting out the goals and
bleachers were completed. •
2. Staff continued working with the Public Works Department on the contract
replacement of deteriorated walkways in Eastbluff Park.
3. Due to drainage problems on the Peninsula Park ballfield, a specialized aerification
and top dressing was performed by contract. This entailed drilling holes and
filling them with a material that provides for improved drainage.
4. The County Agricultural Commissioner representative conducted the annual
pesticide inspection of City storage facilities. Staff received an A+ grade, which
signifies that pesticides are used in a very safe manner for both employees and the
public.
5. The Castaways Park Advisory Committee is finalizing the Phase 1 Planting Plan
for the west side of the park. Planting is tentatively scheduled for early November.
Upcoming Activities for October
1. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground covers will continue Citywide.
2. Staff will continue to monitor the Fletcher Jones and Arches Mitigation Sites in the •
Big Canyon area.
3. Staff will continue coordinating the annual control of rodents by contract services.
4. Staff will perform irrigation and turf renovations at various City facilities.
Tree Division Activities
During the month of September 889 trees were trimmed, no trees were removed,, 38
trees were planted, 5 emergency calls were responded to regarding trees and the Urban
Forester received 183 tree maintenance requests.
1. The City tree- trimming contractor, West Coast Arborists, completed work within
the Corona del Mar and Buffalo Hills areas.
2. The Urban Forester coordinated the Citywide Sidewalk Replacement Program
with the General Services Department Concrete Supervisor. This involved the
Urban Forester inspecting City street trees as related to sidewalk repairs.
3. Six specimen King Palms were planted in the parkway on Riverside Drive due to
the Eucalyptus trees that were removed at the Theater Arts building and according
to City Council Policy G -1 replacement guidelines, as part of the renovation
project.
4. The Tree Sub - Committee and staff conducted two community meetings to receive
public input regarding the proposed tree Redesignation List. The list will be
finalized and presented to the Commission at the November meeting.
