Reports on the activities of the Recreation and Senior Services Divisions for the
past month are enclosed. Both divisions presented a full range of fall activities
for the residents of the community.
A calendar of events provided by Recreation and Senior Services for the fiscal
year is also included.

Re: Recreation Division Monthly Activities Report
Classes /Instruction — A summary of summer classes is provided below. Fall classes
began September 20, 1999.

Attendance 32,147
Revenue collected $292,373
The winter Navigator information is being compiled now and will go to the printer in
October. New instructors for the winter season include Keith Glassman, Fit for Life and
David Gabbe, Vegetarian Cooking
Aquatics — During the 1999 summer season, 7,249 swimmers, for a total attendance of •
36,245, participated in the two pool aquatics programs. In September, 823 participants
used the Marian Bergeson Aquatic Center for lap swimming.
Youth Proerams —
Youth Flap Football — Practice is underway for the 1999 Youth Flag Football, for
children 3rd through 6th grade. Part -time recreation leaders coach teams at the
seven local elementary schools in Newport Beach, two days per week. A total of 19
teams are registered this season, three more than last year.
Pee -Wee Flap Football — The seven -week 1999 Pee -Wee Flag Football Clinic began
Friday, September 24, at Grant Howald Park, offering an introduction to flag
football skills for grades 1 and 2. Children receive hands on instruction from staff in
the skills needed for passing, receiving, kicking, flag pulling and on basic concepts
of offensive and defensive strategies. The final two weeks of the ,program will
incorporate scrimmage games.
Kids Drop -In Afterschool Program — The drop -In program operates from school
dismissal time until 5pm (5:30pm at some sites). The program is offered at Newport
Heights Elementary, Mariners Elementary at Mariners Park, and Harbor View
Elementary at the Community Youth Center. Each day children enjoy a wide choice •
of leisure activities from board games, table games, sports, and arts and crafts. An
area for homework is also provided at each site.

Mariners Homework Center — An exciting new collaboration between the library and .
recreation is putting new energy in the Mariners after - school program. This new
program called KidsConnection will begin in October, featuring homework help, a
computer center, both indoor and outdoor activities. It will be conducted by
Recreation Leaders and Library Assistants.
Adult Sports —
Adult Softball — One hundred and eleven teams will play a 10 -game schedule,
September 13 - December 15. Four city fields are utilized for this program: Bonita
Creek Park (2 fields), Lincoln Athletic Center (1 field), and Grant Howald Park (1
field).
Adult Basketball — Sixty -two teams will play a 10 -game schedule, September 13 -
November 30. Games are played at the West Newport Community Center, Lincoln
Athletic Center, Ensign School, and the Eastbluff Boys and Girls Club.
Special Events —
Upgrading of Facilities — The 'Sports Field Lighting upgrade was •recently completed
at Lincoln Athletic Center field no. 2 and at Grant Howald Park. Musco Lighting will •
make the final adjustment in October to reduce light spillage, and glare.
Newport Rusty Pro -Am Surf Contest —The Newport Rusty Pro -Am surf contest took
place Thursday through Sunday, September 16 -19, at 54th Street Beach, with 219
participants competing in 6 different age divisions.
Halloween Carnival — The 10th annual Halloween carnival will be held Friday,
October 29, at Grant Howald Park from 3 -5pm. A variety of carnival games will be
available, as well as a costume parade, face painting and a tattoo booth.
Rose Parade Excursion — More than half the tickets for the annual Rose Parade
Excursion, January 1, 2000, have already been sold probably because of the
excitement of the millennium.

Re: Senior Services Division Monthly Activities Report
Gazebo Dedication - Thanks to the many donations in memory of Grant Howald, the
Friends of OASIS were able to erect a new gazebo in the OASIS courtyard. The gazebo will
be dedicated in the name of Grant and Inez Howald, as founding members of OASIS. The
dedication and light breakfast will be held on Oct. 1 at 8:30am. Mayor O'Neil will preside
at the ceremony.
Friends of OASIS Book Sale - The Friends of OASIS held their first book sale on Thursday,
September 23. The event was a huge success with many community members attending.
Refreshments baked by the volunteers were also available for a small donation. No
expenses were associated with the event; all monies will be used to offset the costs of the
many senior programs at the OASIS Center.
Rummage Sale - The Friends of OASIS are working diligently in preparation of the annual •
Rummage Sale held on October 16 Et 17. Box loads of rummage have been coming in daily
and many volunteers are busy sorting and pricing. Computers, furniture, clothing, jewelry
and other items will all be for sale at very reasonable prices and hopes to raise $1'0,000.
Fall Classes - New classes that will be offered are "Healthy Eating," "Life History Journal
Writing," 'Ballroom and Line Dance" and many computer courses. OASIS is also very excited
about partnering with UCI's Academy of Lifelong Learning. The Academy will be offering
four classes at OASIS, 'Discovering Spiritual Values through Literature," 'The Second
Adventures of Life," 'Transformation of Ideas of the World by Modern Science," and
"Mysteries of the Universe."
Pancake Breakfast is Back - The first breakfast of the season was served to 275 community
members on Saturday, September 11. Volunteers, both young and old served breakfast at
the table.
In October - A new member tea is being held on October 6. October 8 is the annual Flu
Shot Clinic from 8 am to 12 noon, which is being held in conjunction with our Senior
Resource Fair.
