Re: Support Services of the Friends of OASIS
RECOMMENDATION
The support from the Friends of OASIS is a vital part of the Senior Services of this
City. There is concern that current fundraising efforts may be negatively impacted by
the efforts of the Costa Mesa Senior Center. See attached editorial from the Daily
Pilot.
BACKGROUND
The Friends of OASIS, Inc. were formed in 1977 when the need for a support group to
raise money and plan activities for the new OASIS Senior Center became evident. The
Friends are organized with a 21 member Board of Directors and several working
committees. The Friends assist in all aspects of the Center's operation and play an
integral part in financing the activities and services of the Center.
The OASIS Senior Center acts as a focal point for senior services. It offers both
recreational and human services. The Friends of OASIS have an advisory role and serve
as a support group, to raise funds to offset the cost of the total program of senior
services.
SUPPORT FROM THE FRIENDS
The Friends have a budget of $238,000 for FY 1999/00. Funds are raised through
fundraising events, gift shop profits, travel department, donations from fund drive
campaign, grants, and membership dues of $7 per year. Note the activities in this
month's staff report.
The Friends budget include the following activities:
Two Van drivers for the Center's very active transportation program
Rehabilitation of the facility
Purchasing needed equipment and furnishings
Providing entertainment and supplies for special events
Other worthwhile activities.
The Board also implements some OASIS social activities. For example, the Friends
provide the Sunday activities at OASIS. They pay a Supervisor to open the facility and
supervise the activities for the day. The monthly pancake breakfast is entirely run by
volunteers. Professional Jazz concerts are held 3 to 4 times a year at a low cost of $3
per person. In addition, the efforts of the almost three hundred volunteers who help
in all aspects of the Center's operation. If these volunteers were paid employees,
• their hours would equal the work of 1'4 -full time employees.
The Friends of OASIS are a major asset to the Center. They provide the means for
OASIS to have top quality services and activities for the community.
