Item No.
October 5, 1999
TO: Parks, Beaches and Recreation Commission
FROM: General Services Director
SUBJECT: Corona del Mar Reforestation: (Phase III)
Recommendation
To approve a Reforestation (Phase III) request involving the removal of 36 Ficus
trees along the north side of the Coast Highway in Corona del Mar to be replaced
by King Palms and Hong Kong Orchid trees.
To accept a donation of $35,000 from the Corona del Mar Business Improvement
District for Reforestation (Phase III) on East Coast Highway and direct staff to
request a budget amendment from the City Council for the balance of the project
cost.
History
The Parks, Beaches, and Recreation Commission, and the City Council in late
1998 approved a second extensive reforestation project in conjunction with the
Corona del Mar Business Improvement District (BID). The City Council approved
an expenditure of $35,000 to match the $35,000 that the BID had committed for
the removal of 50 Ficus parkway street trees and the subsequent replacement with
King Palms and Hong Kong Orchid trees. Phase II of the project was completed
earlier this year.
Discussion
Mr. Wade Roberts submitted the attached letter committing $35,000 from BID for
the Reforestation project (Phase III). Additionally, BID is requesting that the City
match the $35,000 so that the project can be completed. Staff will request
sufficient funds to complete the project in the form of a budget amendment to the
. City Council. The project will be scheduled for this fall and is the final phase of
the project.
• The reforestation project will include removal of the Ficus trees, planting of 36"
box King Palms, 24" box Hong Kong Orchid trees, and sidewalk removal and
replacement at a cost of $20,000, and the installation of irrigation to the new trees.
Additionally, all the requirements of the City Council Policy G -1 will be met.
Mr. Roberts will receive a copy of this report and a notice of the October 5 Parks,
Beaches, and Recreation Commission meeting.
Very respectfully,
David E. Niederhaus

Dear Mr. Niederhaus:
The Corona del Mar Business Improvement District has approved
an expenditure of $35,000 to the City of Newport Beach to be used for
Reforestation Phase III. The CDM BID is asking that the City match these
funds with an additional $35,000 to be used for ficus tree removal and
replacement on Coast Highway in Corona del Mar. We are requesting that
the project begin in mid October so as not to block access to businesses
during the November/December holidays.
Sincerely,
Wade Roberts
