Ballroom Dancing, - The OASIS staff are reevaluating the free Friday afternoon dances at
the Center which have been an OASIS tradition for over 20 years. The band has
encountered illnesses and deaths and has lost many of the volunteer core that has held this
group of musicians together. Trumpet player Charlie Ecclestone, 91 years old, has played
with the band every Friday for the past 22 years. Willard Courtney, 85 years old, says he
would like to be able to travel a tittle with his wife. The staff and the Friends of OASIS are
very appreciative for all their hard work and dedication of these volunteers that made
these Friday Dances so special.
Beginning in October, the remaining band members will reconvene, with a small charge for
the Friday Dance to pay for the band's services. It is hoped that the dancers will continue
to support this activity with the added small participation fee.
•HICAP Lecture - The Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program will provide the
Center with a lecture on HMO's on Wednesday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m. Participants will
be able to sort out which type of health plan is best for them and have their concerns
about the HMO system answered. HICAP is a non - profit insurance advocacy group.
Jazz Concert - The night Blooming Jazzmen returned for yet another popular engagement
on Sunday, September 24 at 2:00 p.m.. The Sunday Jazz concerts usually sell out at 400
people. The Friends of OASIS subsidize the concerts and therefore the ticket prices are
kept to a minimum of $4.00 for members and $6 for non - members.
Pancake Breakfast Returns - The monthly pancake breakfasts resume this Saturday at
OASIS. The breakfast, at $2 for adults and $1 for children, is a fundraiser for the Friends of
OASIS and staffed by volunteers of all ages. The event has been a tradition in Corona del
Mar for the past twenty years.
Candidate's Forum - The OASIS Center will be holding a candidate's forum, Friday, October
6 at 10:30am. The forum is open to the public, however the majority of the audience will
be older adults and interested in issues that affect seniors. Of particular interest will be
Greenlight and affordable housing issues and will be followed by a luncheon.
