SUBJECT: Parks and Trees Divisions Activities Report
Park Division Activities
1. The Bonita Canyon Sports Park had its Grand Opening Day Celebration on August 24,
2003. This culminates over five years of planning, design and construction. The annual
cost of maintenance and utilities at the Park will be just under $200,000.
• 2. Park maintenance staff is coordinating with the Recreation and Senior Services and
Public Works Departments regarding the play area renovations at Cliff Drive, San
Miguel, Channel Place, Bonita Creek and Grant Howald Parks.
3. Park maintenance staff installed landscape and irrigation around the temporary office
trailer that has been placed in front of City Hall. Staff received numerous compliments for
this project that included installations of drought tolerant plants and a low volume emitter
irrigation system.
4. All sport fields were aerated and fertilized by contact forces in preparation for the upcoming
fall season.
5. Staff is working with Recreation and Senior Services and the Public Works Departments
relative to the new Mariners Library and the anticipated impacts to the Mariners Park
maintenance
6. An Eagle Scout project was completed at Galaxy View Park, which consisted renovating
four planter areas. Drought tolerant plants were used in the landscape. Parks Crew Chief,
Kevin Pekar, supervised the Eagle Scout candidate in completing this long needed
renovation project.
• 7. Four Commission - approved donation benches were installed; two at San Joaquin Hills Park
and two at the Medina Way and the Edgewater Avenue street end.

Upcoming Activities for September
1. The planting of replacement shrubs and ground covers will continue Citywide.
2. Staff will continue coordinating the annual control of rodents with contract services.
Tree Division Activities
During the month of August 1,470 trees were trimmed, 35 trees were planted, and 8
emergency tree calls were responded to. The Urban Forester received 89 tree maintenance
requests, which is well above the average for a monthly period.
1. The City's tree trimming contractor, West Coast Arborist, is currently trimming trees
within the Balboa Peninsula, Eastbluff, and Harbor View areas. Additionally, they
have begun trimming the trees in the newly annexed area of Santa Ana Heights.
2. The Urban Forester coordinated the Citywide Sidewalk Replacement Program with
• the Concrete Maintenance Supervisor and a Public Works Inspector. This work
involved the Urban Forester inspecting City street trees as related to sidewalk
repairs.
3. The attached Tree Activity Report summarizes requests and field activities
performed during the past two months.
