'6SNER¢AS, in 1872 1. Steri7ng 'Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of
Agriculture that a specialday be set aside for the planting of trees, and
" ERBAS, this holiday, called Arbor Day, was first observed with the planting of
more than a miQion trees in Ne6raska; and
`CNX+EREAS 2003 is the 1319 anniversary of the holiday and Arbor Day is now
observed throughout the nation and the world and
UWEREEAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water,
cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the'temperature, clean the air, produce fife-
giving o .Vgen andpravide habitat for wi [Cfe; and
'WX+EUAS, trees in our city increase property values, boost the economic verve of
business areas, and 6eautify our community;' and
WffOkEAS, trees, wherever they are planted are a source of joy andspiritualrenewa¢
and
4'VJ(EU,gS, Newport Beach has been recognizedas a Tree City VSA by the National
Ar6ortDay Toundation andis committed to its tree - planting efforts.
