SUBJECT: UNSCHEDULED VACANCY ON THE PLANNING COMMISSION
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Accept resignation of Shant Agajanian (Planning Commission) effective May 19,
2003;
2. Waive noticing and appointment requirements pertaining to unscheduled
vacancies as outlined in City Council Policy A -2; and
3. Confirm the direction provided by the Ad Hoc Appointments Committee to
incorporate the appointment for this vacancy with the appointments to fill the
scheduled vacancies.
DISCUSSION:
Background:
Attached is a letter of resignation submitted on May 19, 2003 by Shant Agajanian,
Planning Commissioner. Mr. Agajanian was appointed to the Commission on June 27,
2000 (effective July 1, 2000) and his term expires on June 30, 2004, therefore an
appointment will need to be made to fill his unexpired term.
Based on the fact that the Council is currently in the process of filling the scheduled
vacancies for terms that expire on June 30, 2003 the Ad Hoc Appointments Committee
recommended that the noticing and appointment requirements for unscheduled
vacancies as outlined in City Council Policy A -2 be waived. Furthermore, it is
recommended that the City Council confirm the direction provided by the committee to
incorporate the filling of this unscheduled vacancy with the scheduled vacancies.

Re: Resignation from the Planning Commission effectively
immediately.
Dear Mayor Bromberg,
Please accept my resignation from the Planning Commission.
I sold my residence in Newport Beach today and plan to relocate to my
studio in Joshua Tree, where I plan to pursue a life of travel, arts and
letters.
I am proud to have contributed in some small way to the ongoing work of
the Planning Commission since June 2000. I know that city planning in
Newport Beach will continue to be well served by the city's many active
residents, able commissioners, highly professional staff and effective
political leadership.
Newport Beach has been the location of my home and business since
1984. I have become closely attached to the city in that time. My friends,
colleagues and neighbors, as well as the city's natural beauty, will be
sorely missed.
Planning Commissioner
