Newport Beach City Arts Commission
Thursday, November 10, 2011 – 5:00pm

Convened at 5:01pm
Call to Order and Roll Call:
Commissioners Present: Robyn Grant, Chair; Rita Goldberg, Secretary; Robert Smith, Vice Chair; Gil
Lasky; Christopher Trela; Carole Boller, Arlene Greer
Commissioners Absent: None
Staff Present: Jana Barbier, Cultural Arts Coordinator
Public Present: None
Public Comments: None
Arts Coordinator Barbier was unable to stay for the meeting and left at 5:15pm. Commission
Secretary, Rita Goldberg offered to take the minutes from 5:15 through the remainder of the
meeting:
Minutes from prior meeting approved.
Committee Reports:
Visual Arts
Commissioner Boller indicated that the Lenahan artwork had been dropped off for restoration and
will be framed. Jana Barbier indicated that the purchase requisition has been made and requested
that staff be consulted in regards to the frame selection. Commissioner Boller indicated that the
cost of restoration and framing was estimated to be under $5,000. Commissioner Boller indicated
that the Oasis Center may be interested in displaying the Lenahan art collection. Jana Barbier
indicated that Library Director Cynthia Cowell may have a preference regarding the future display
of these artworks and should be consulted.
Commissioner Boller indicated that she would like to set up a meeting with Commissioner Greer
and Jana Barbier to review all the City’s art collection. Commissioner Boller also requested that a
meeting be scheduled between herself, Commissioner Greer and Jana Barbier regarding the
scheduled art show to be held April 14th at the Oasis Senior Center.
Performing Arts
Commissioner Grant indicated that previous Broadway musical performer contacted her to be
considered for next summer’s concerts. Commissioners Goldberg and Lasky agreed that
Broadway music would be redundant this soon and expressed a preference to seek out
other musical genres instead.

Commissioner Goldberg indicated a preference for outreach of quality local talent for next
summer’s concert series and will investigate the opportunity to have students at OCHSA
perform.
Commissioner Goldberg indicated that a Gene Autry Museum tour is scheduled for mid-
February (16th) but she will be unable to attend due to a conflict. Jana Barbier and
Commissioner Grant will be in attendance. Commissioner Boller noted that the museum
will be hosting an American Masters display at that time and offered to contact Jana
Barbier with the information so it can be included in the publicity.
NBAF
Commissioner Greer shared dates of upcoming events sponsored by the NBAF. Pack of Lies
theater performance is slated for February 25th and Art in the Park is slated for June 16th.
Art in Public Spaces
Commissioner Smith indicated that the Tree Under Bridge sculpture is now scratched due
to ADA issues. The artist will be approached for another idea.
Commissioner Smith indicated that the City Attorney noted that if we accept the Sky Divers
piece and don’t end up finding a place to display it, then the artist may have recourse.
Commissioner Smith indicated he would contact the artist and get in writing a satisfactory
understanding regarding this matter.
Publicity
Commissioner Trela noted that he acknowledge the article in the Daily Pilot regarding the
art grants.
Granting Discussion
Commissioner Grant noted that the Commission needs a Cultural Arts Grants Committee.
Commissioners Goldberg and Greer volunteered to co-chair this committee.
Budget
Commissioner Lasky indicated that there is $13,701.08 left in the budget through June of
2012. This amount will be needed to fund museum tour(s), Art Exhibit , and possible
Imagination Celebration. A Budget Allocations Item was requested to be included on the
agenda for the next meeting.
December Meeting
The December Meeting is cancelled and a commissioners/spouse or guests holiday party will be
held at the home of Commissioner Grant.
