HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/12/2014 - City Arts Commission - 03 Staff Report Cultural Arts Activities The month of May has been spent preparing for our busy summer schedule. The 2014 Concerts on the Green take place on June 22, July 6, August 17. A 4th Concert on the Green has been added to this summer’s line-up with the addition of Desperado – A Tribute to the Eagles on Sunday, September 7. Adult Programming Librarian Andrea Jason is coordinating the concerts. All of the concerts are held on Sundays, beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 7:30 p.m. They are free and open to the public with free parking available in the adjacent Civic Center parking structure and Central Library parking lot. Additionally, the stage is also set for two evenings of Shakespeare by the Sea on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20 at the Bonita Canyon Sports Park. This season’s shows include the classic drama, “Hamlet, Prince of Denmark,” and the lighthearted comedy, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Andrea Jason is also coordinating Shakespeare By The Sea. The 2014 Newport Beach Art Exhibition will be held at the Newport Beach Civic Center this year on Saturday, June 14. The one-day juried exhibition, celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, will feature paintings, photography, mixed media and sculpture from over 100 artists. Admission is free and the event is open to the public from 1-6 p.m. Guests will be able to view the artwork, meet the artists and purchase some of the original artwork that will be on display. A portion of the proceeds from the art sale will fund Newport Beach community arts programs. A wine and cheese reception will be held from 3:30- 5:30 p.m. with awards being presented by Mayor Rush Hill and the City Arts Commission. Staff is planning a Grand Opening event for the Inaugural Sculpture Garden Exhibition that will be held on Saturday, September 13 at 2 PM in the Civic Center Community Room. Both the Art Exhibition and the Sculpture Garden Grand Opening are coordinated by Janis Dinwiddie of Dinwiddie events. All of these summer arts programs, presented by the City Arts Commission are free and open to the public.
