HomeMy WebLinkAbout9/11/2014 - City Arts Commission - 07 Staff Report Art Exhibitions in the Balboa TheatreAgenda Item B.3.
On August 12th, 2014, the City Council directed staff to seek formal projections showing if the use of the
Balboa Theatre as a fine arts center would be economically feasible. These projections will be presented
to the Council later in order to assist making a formal decision on the concept. The currently empty
theater would be renovated as a City-run fine arts center, offering exhibitions, youth day camps and
workshops in the arts, crafts and music. The venue could also be used for live performances, lectures,
and films.
At the August 14th City Arts Commission meeting Chair Goldberg and Commissioner Logan requested
information regarding the potential exhibition of art in the facility.
I spoke to Recreation and Senior Services Director Laura Detweiler, who feels that a wall art display with
a interchangeable system similar to the one in use at OASIS will work nicely in the venue. She feels that
the space would also accommodate art shows.
