TITLE: Cultural Arts Activities for October 2014
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Most of October was spent preparing for the Rex Brandt Centennial Celebration and the Blue Sky plaque
dedication ceremony. Staff from the Municipal Operations Department and Public Works did a great job
of working with the plaque pedestal contractor to prepare the site and add landscaping after the plaque
installation.
Staff brought the Arts Commission recommended Cultural Arts Grants to City Council for approval at the
October 28th meeting. Approved Cultural Arts Grants recipients include:
• Baroque Music Festival
• ExplorOcean
• Festival Ballet Theatre
• Newport Beach Film Festival
• Orange County Museum of Art
• South Coast Repertory Theater
• Southland Opera
Checks will be presented to Cultural Arts Grant recipients at the November 25th City Council meeting.
On October 14th, the City Arts Commission hosted the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the City of
Newport Beach’s relation with our Sister City Okazaki, Japan. The Okazaki delegation presented a statue
of Tokugawa Ieyasu and gifts were exchanged from the Mayors of our respective cities. The Bamboo
Courtyard, itself a gift from Okazaki, served as an elegant and appropriate site for the ceremony and
reception, which featured traditional Japanese song and dance.
