RECOMMENDATION:
Staff requests that the City Arts Commission approve a proposal from the Civic Center Art Placement Ad
Hoc Subcommittee to display loaned art from OCMA in Civic Center Building.
FUNDING REQUIREMENTS:
Funding requirement to be determined.
DISCUSSION:
The Civic Center Art Placement Ad Hoc Subcommittee has been tasked both with identifying areas
within the Civic Center building suitable for displaying borrowed art, and identifying institutions willing
to loan art. Commissioners Ware and Logan have identified a number of areas in the Civic Center
building where art can be successfully displayed (see Attachment A).
The Subcommittee has also identified the Orange County Museum of Art as a potential source of loaned
art. Staff has prepared a standard facility report for the Newport Beach Civic Center building so OCMA
can assess both environmental controls (light levels, climate, earthquake, etc) and security. The
standard facility report was completed with input from the City’s Principal Engineer, Fong Tse, and Steve
Michael of the Newport Beach Fire Department. The Standard Facility Report was submitted to Alyssa
Cordova, Curatorial Associate of Orange County Museum of Art.
Pending approval, the Civic Center Art Placement Ad Hoc Subcommittee will work with City staff and
representatives from OCMA with installing art in designated areas.
Pending approval of the standard facilities report by OCMA, the Civic Center Art Placement Ad Hoc
Subcommittee will coordinate site placement recommendations with Civic Center staff. Counsel will
also be sought from the City Attorney’s office regarding insurance and liability. Updates on the project
will be provided at the City Arts Commission meetings during Civic Center Art Placement Ad Hoc
Subcommittee monthly reports. Installation and ancillary costs will be presented to the City Arts
Commission for approval.
