HomeMy WebLinkAbout8/13/2015 - City Arts Commission - 04 Staff Report Selection of Alternate Sculpture to Replace Mama Crusty_____________________________________________________________________________________ RECOMMENDATION: Based on input from the Sculpture Exhibition Ad Hoc Subcommittee, staff requests that the City Arts Commission recommend that Tim Little’s Mama Crusty be replaced by Edwin Hamilton’s Pebble Series. DISCUSSION: Sculptor Tim Little has withdrawn his piece, Mama Crusty, from the 2015 Sculpture Exhibition in Civic Center Park. The Sculpture Exhibition Ad Hoc Subcommittee considers Edwin Hamilton’s Pebble Series as a suitable replacement. Edwin Hamilton’s Pebble Series measures 5’ x 6.5’ x 3.5’ and weighs 10,500 lbs. It is carved from Sierra White Granite and was completed in 2010. Mr. Hamilton’s honorarium is $5,100 and the piece has a sale price of $75,000. Due to its weight it will be cost prohibitive to site Pebble Series where Mama Crusty was originally intended. The site for Pebble Series needs to be accessible by forklift, and the combined weight of the sculpture and equipment surpasses the tolerance of the pedestrian bridges. Sunflower can also be easily transported across pedestrian bridges in the park. The site originally planned for Sunflower will then become an appropriate site in terms of installation for Pebble Series because of its accessibility to the path (see Attachment B).
